Chicago Trip | Packing, Capsule Wardrobe, Situational Awareness

Navy Pier

Packing Tip- Keep clothing clean by keeping shoes in separate bags.

I was just in Chicago for a friend’s wedding, and it was awesome! Most of our time was spent at the wedding and hanging out with friends at an Air B&B, but we also went downtown for a day. Being gluten free, I didn’t expect to taste any of the famous Chicago Pizza, but bless their hearts, Giordano’s has the most delicious gluten free pizza! All my gluten free friends, have you tried it yet?

Safety

When I travel, the first thing I do is check USCCA’s reciprocity map to see if I can take my firearm along.   Just click your state and a color-coded diagram will show you which states honor your concealed carry permit.

Sadly, Illinois doesn’t honor my Ohio permit but as my Uncle always says, “Safety has no quitting time!” so, I brought along my pepper spray, stayed with the people in my group, and practiced situational awareness to observe my surroundings.

I was pleasantly surprised how my new capsule wardrobe simplified the packing process. Since the temperatures in Chicago are a little colder than Columbus, I chose to pack some items outside my spring capsule, but it was still much easier to choose what to bring. Plus, it took a lot less time. I think this collection of clothing gives a good starting point from which to mix and match.

  • Capsule Items: a pair of cropped jeans, white t-shirt, and a grey sweater with pearl accents.

  • Non-capsule items: black leggings, grey herringbone blazer, striped cowl neck sweatshirt, cocktail dress.

Packing tip- When traveling, keep the clothing in your suitcase clean by storing shoes inside a plastic bag. I purchased new curtains recently and each panel came in one of these zippered bags. I almost threw them out, but I’m glad I decided to keep them because they come in handy every time I travel. I think it’s good to take note of the packaging that products come in. You may be able to reuse it for another purpose!

I was looking for a modest and classic style of dress to wear to the wedding. This one checks those boxes and even has pockets!

Casual outfit for hanging with friends after the wedding.

The only gun I saw on this trip! (pictured above). This was next door to the an amazing breakfast place called Buttermilk. I’m still thinking about their gluten free pancakes!
