Your winter coat may protect you from the elements, but is it getting in the way of your safety?
I think we’d all agree that it’s not enough to merely own a self-protection tool. You must have it with you, be skilled in using it, and be able to access it quickly. Thanks to an online friend who periodically checks in, I’ve been more mindful about that last part. He made the comment that unless the tool is easily accessible, it can become a false sense of security.
With that in mind, I’ve become very aware of my winter coat and the obstacle it can present.
Don’t let your firearm become a false sense of security!

A few weeks ago, I shared this idea on Instagram stories, and it led to some good conversation. With the help of a few followers, we came up with the suggestions below.
4 Concealed Carry Tips When Wearing A Winter Coat
Wear the coat unzipped – If it’s not too cold, this is a great option. Depending where on your body you have the firearm, you may be able to pull it out as normal, or you may need to push aside a coat flap.
Carry in your coat pocket – Keep the firearm in your coat pocket and make sure to protect the trigger with a holster/trigger guard. Sticky Holsters is a company that makes great pocket holsters.
Use a secondary tool – Go ahead and conceal carry under your zipped coat. Bring a secondary tool in your pocket, which can be used at a moment’s notice. This could be a flashlight, stun gun, pepper spray, etc.
The nice thing about a Flashlight - Daylight hours are shorter during the cold months, so it can be used to see where you’re going. If a threat is advancing, you can also shine this in their eyes to temporarily blind them, while you get away or access your firearm.
Tuck your Shirt - If you can access your firearm by lifting up your coat (short coat vs. long), tuck your shirt behind the holster to reduce the number of layers that could get in the way.

As you bundle up this season, consider how the extra layers may affect access to your firearm. Be prepared and have a plan!
