The Best Thigh Holsters For Women's Concealed Carry

Concealed Carry in a Dress or Skirt

Historically, men have been the largest demographic of gun owners, but the tides are changing. More than 21.5 million women in the United States have chosen to exercise their second amendment rights! It’s not surprising that manufacturers have recognized the need for more feminine holster options.

There are many holster choices, but the thigh holster (or leg holster) gets our vote for situations that call for dresses, especially in the summer when the weather gets hotter, and clothing gets smaller.

Keep reading to determine if a thigh holster is the best option for your peace of mind.

Two Types of thigh holsters

Thigh Holster Garter

A thigh holster garter is a band worn around your leg with a special pocket for your gun. The Garter model can be placed anywhere on your leg – moved up and down and twisted side to side, making the garter holster compatible with almost any type of skirt, possibly even a mini skirt.

Wear it on the outside of your leg with an A-line, a maxi dress, or a full skirt. For a pencil skirt, move the pistol to your inner thigh. A patterned, flowy, or loose fabric can also help distract from any visible outline.

The band is adjustable and fits a variety of body types. A rubber lining on the inside keeps it from rolling or sliding down your leg. Even still, the garter must fit snugly to support the gun's weight, which means it could pinch your skin when sitting down or standing up. You may also experience chaffing on the leg opposite the garter.

Thigh Holster Shorts

Due to the versatility and extra coverage, thigh holster shorts are our favorite option for concealed carry in a dress! This kind of holster covers your legs in slick material, which makes it easier for the gun to slide between your thighs and also prevents chafing. Compared to thigh holster bands, thigh holster shorts can feel more stable. You won't have to worry about them slipping down your leg because they fit like a pair of workout shorts. The form-fitting tightness can make you look your best in your dress.

This option may not pair well with miniskirts because the shorts can peek below your hemline. But they are perfect for form-fitting dresses with a knee-high, midi, or maxi length. As with any soft holster, it’s important to add a hard trigger cover or use a manual safety. This pair has a plastic insert sewn in-between the material.

Tips For Using A Thigh Holster

  • No one wants to be in a situation where they must draw their firearm, but preparedness is crucial. Take the time to practice drawing your gun while you are wearing a variety of outfits. Different types of skirts and materials offer unique challenges, which you can overcome with practice, so familiarize yourself with the steps necessary.

  • For instance, if you need to remove a retention strap, this may require the use of both hands. Some women dislike using retention straps because they prolong the draw time, but you can reduce the delay with practice. You might consider adding a KYDEX or lightweight plastic holster to your thigh holster pocket for increased speed.

  • Pay attention to any clothing design elements that might interfere with your drawing ability. Is there a liner or additional layer of fabric under your skirt that could fall back over the gun? Or perhaps some ornamental ruffles that could be dangerous? You can get used to your particular outfit with a few minutes of daily practice. The peace of mind you'll experience from being ready for anything is well worth it.

How to Draw from a Thigh Holster

If the worst happens and you are required to protect yourself or your loved ones, follow these steps:

  1. With the leg NOT wearing the gun strap, take a step backward. This gives you more room to access your firearm, puts more distance between you and the threat, and positions you in a stable position in case you need to use your gun.

  2. "Clear the gun" by lifting your skirt up. Take the retention strap off if necessary. Never look down at your gun or holster; always keep your eyes on the threat (PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE).

  3. In one fluid motion, take the gun out of the holster and raise it to your support hand.

  4. Press the gun outward and keep the muzzle pointed toward the threat.
