What comes first, the holster or the outfit? It all depends on your inspiration piece! Today I’m styling a concealed carry outfit using my Top 5 tips to choose a holster for your outfit.

The starting point of today’s outfit is a sweater I recently purchased at Banana republic. I was drawn to it partly because of the color and fine knit, but mostly because of the sleeves. It’s not quite a puff sleeve, but the pleats on the shoulder create some subtle volume.

Gold and olive-green look great together, so next I included layering necklaces and a pair of earrings from Madewell. Then, I added my favorite pair of high waisted jeans, a pair of leopard print pumps and a concealed carry purse made by Cameleon bags. Today I’ll be carrying on my body, but I like to have a purse with a built-in holster readily available.

I purposely sized up in the sweater to give extra room for the gun. The material drapes well, making it optimal for concealment. My jeans are also helpful because they’re both supportive and high waisted. Wearing a belt over my hip bones can be uncomfortable, especially with the added weight of a firearm, which is why I prefer high wasted jeans for concealed carry.

While carrying my SIG P365, I tried on the following holsters:

Eclipse Holsters IWB - This holster provides a hard trigger cover and as long as your pants are supportive enough, you don’t need a belt.

T-Rex Arms Sidecar – Provides a hard trigger cover and a spot for an extra magazine. A belt is required. The clips make this holster easy to attach and detach.

Dene Adams Corset- This is a “soft holster” but the company sells a hard trigger cover that can be added. No belt is required, and it moves easily with your body.

The holsters all worked very well, but that’s not always the case. To illustrate a dilemma you may encounter, I tried on a bulkier gun and holster combination – the Springfield Armory Hellcat and a kydex holster made by FDO Industries. (Pictured above). While they’re both great options, the combination may be a little too bulky for the outfit. To wear this combo, I’d be more likely to Dress Around The Holster.

When I tried carrying the same Hellcat in the Can Can Concealment Hip Hugger Elite, (pictured above) it worked perfectly, with no printing! Keep in mind this is a “soft holster” because the trigger is not covered by hard material.

Safety tip: It’s possible for the trigger to be pulled through a “soft holster.” Always make sure you’re carrying in a way to prevent this. Some ideas include adding a hard trigger cover or using a manual safety.
